Members of Huntsville Horticultural Society were out this morning doing what they do best: putting their green thumbs to work for the community.
Every year these dedicated volunteers go about quietly planting flowers and beautifying Huntsville’s urban core to bring beautiful colour to the downtown.
The organization, founded in 1925, is solely responsible for purchasing and planting flowers for 14 planters and three gardens in Huntsville’s downtown and maintaining the gardens and barrels at Huntsville Public Library.
According to their website, in recent years they have also helped the Town’s parks department maintain the Veteran’s Memorial Garden and plant the gardens at the Brunel Locks and at Flag Park. As well, in conjunction with the Rotary Club, they’ve planted several new small gardens at Orchard Park and Avery Beach.
They hold an annual plant sale to encourage horticulture and the planting of native species in the community. They also sponsor a bursary for graduating Huntsville High School students pursuing studies in horticulture or a related field as well as holding a garden tour which takes place on July 16 this year.
