A visit to Santa is always a magical experience, but when you get there by open-air train adorned with thousands of lights, it becomes positively enchanting.
A Portage Flyer Christmas has become an annual tradition for families, with multiple generations enjoying the festive fun.
Beginning at Muskoka Heritage Place’s Rotary Village Station, visitors are treated to carols and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies – while supplies last – from Huntsville High School hospitality students while you await their turn to board the train. As a special treat, Santa pays the tax on the tickets so they’re just five dollars per person – get yours just prior to boarding.
You can take the leisurely 20-minute ride to the end of the line as many times as you want with your ticket. There, Santa awaits in the Purser’s Cabin to hear your Christmas wish list and your side of the story. Remember to dress warmly – the Portage Flyer’s open-air cars offer a beautiful view and fresh winter air.

A Portage Flyer Christmas happens one night only – always the Saturday before Christmas Eve – on December 17 from 5-8 p.m, with the last train leaving the station at 7:30 p.m. Arrive early if you can – it’s a popular event. Plenty of free parking is available across the road on Forbes Hill Drive, at the Active Living Centre, at the Canada Summit Centre, or across from the main entrance to Muskoka Heritage Place.
And remember – even though it’s an open-air event, smoking isn’t permitted on town property. Registered service animals are welcome but please leave your pets at home.
