Local author Ryan Kidd found that the COVID-19 pandemic provided him with more time for research and writing. The result is the recently published Intriguing Port Sydney Stories and Photos, which contains fascinating stories about the unique early residents of the village.
“They arrived with the first rush of settlers. They were also well-educated and were ‘characters’,” said Kidd, adding that “the area followed the usual pattern—lumbering, the era of the lodges and eventually cottagers and their supporting trades—but the community left its indelible mark in its development because of these special people.”
Kidd notes that “visitors to Port Sydney today are also awed by the beauty and presence of the lake, the islands, and the hills. There are few communities in Ontario where the panorama is so impressive.”
Residents and visitors alike, as well as anyone with a connection to the village, will enjoy these entertaining stories.
Intriguing Port Sydney Stories and Photos is available at Jamieson’s General Store and at Dean’s Hardware in Port Sydney.
Kidd has two previous books: These Memories I Leave to You, in collaboration with Dave Scott, and The Newcomers.
