The Port Sydney/Utterson & Area Chamber of Commerce announced its 2018 Citizen of the Year—Mike Vadlja, District Chief for Station 3, Port Sydney, Huntsville Fire Department—at the Port Sydney Canada Day celebrations held on Sunday, July 1 at the Port Sydney Beach.
“We are happy to celebrate this year’s recipient as someone who is described by fellow firefighters and members of the community as friendly, dedicated, thorough, easy-going, a team player who is fun to work with, someone supportive of local businesses, and events,” said Derek Watson-Brown, Chamber Vice-President.
D’Arcy LeClair, a local business owner and fellow fire fighter, added that “Mike consistently offers his time and energy with fire department personnel and equipment for all of the town events. From the annual Port Sydney Yard Sale, to the Pancake Breakfast, to the Stephenson District Lion’s Club annual Duck Race, to the set up and take-down of the Port Sydney Turkey Dinner Fireworks and Winter Carnival and all the many other events and programs in-between.”
It is clear to everyone that Mike is an individual determined to make our community a great and caring place to live.
With our community’s gratitude, we celebrate this year’s winner—Mike Vadlja! Thank you for all you do!
The Port Sydney/Utterson & Area Chamber of Commerce ‘Citizen of the Year’ award was initially created in 1983, and is presented each year on Canada Day to one person who has made a significant contribution to our community. This individual must be someone who exemplifies community spirit and adds to the quality of life for others in the community. He or she is a person who has ‘gone the extra mile’ and who always volunteers when there is a need.
