The Invisible Fence Pee Wee Rep Otters headed to Sudbury for the International Silver Stick Regional tournament on the weekend of December 2-4. The team was excited to attempt the win after a winning streak of regular season games. This year, the team has a mixture of kids with a variety of levels of ability and different experiences in coaching strategies. Coach Royal explained that the team strategy this year has been to control the puck. He tells the boys, “as long as we have control of the puck, the other team cannot score.”
The Otters have been working diligently in practice and in regular season games to work together from fore checking, to breakouts, to passing and position. The hard work has paid off as they have won most of their recent games. But the hard work and dedication came together on the ice at the Silver Stick tournament showing how important it is to play as team.
With a win, a tie and loss in the round robin games on Friday and Saturday, the Pee Wee Rep Otters met their match, the Nickel City North Stars, in the semi-finals on Sunday morning. The first two periods were described as watching a see-saw battle, as the North Stars returned a goal for every Otter goal scored, tying up the game 2-2 going in to the third period. But the Otters were able to control the puck and they owned the third period to pull ahead with a 4-2 win, securing a spot in the finals later that afternoon.
Heading into the finals, the Otters were feeling confident and knew what had to be done to bring home the win against the Nickel City Bruins. The ice was where the action was at, with two scores on net by both teams during the first two periods leaving the third as the time to shine and break the tie.
Giving it their all, the Otters were able to pull ahead by two, but the Bruins gained momentum and scored back closing the Otters lead to one. The Otters sealed the deal with a goal on the Bruins empty net, celebrating a victory with the win 5-3.
Congratulations to the Pee Wee Rep Otters from your coaches, bench staff and fans on a well-deserved win and becoming the regional Silver Stick Champions!
The team will head to the International Silver Stick championships in Port Huron, Michigan on January 19, 2017.
