Pediatric physiotherapy: children need specialized care

Tammy Darby is a registered physiotherapist who provides specialized pediatric care at Physio Works Muskoka in Huntsville.

Tammy has a deep interest in physiotherapy for children from infancy to 18 and brings her much-needed expertise to families in Muskoka and surrounding regions.  Childhood motor development (how children move), sports and performance (strength, flexibility, and proper mechanics), childhood pelvic health, and musculoskeletal injuries are among Tammy’s areas of expertise.

Pleasant and instantly accessible, Tammy Darby is a cheerful and fun-loving mom of three who has dedicated her career to ongoing learning and applying her knowledge of childhood health recovery and physical support.  “I love working with young people and easing concerns for parents and caregivers,” Tammy shared.

To help parents understand all that pediatric physiotherapy can offer, Tammy offers “Purposeful Play Workshops.” These free face-to-face workshops at Physio Works Muskoka help parents during the first year of a baby’s development and in 2023 Tammy will also offer a special program for young families called Movement Milestones: Gross Motor Milestone Check-Ins. Tammy’s hope is that these infant to pre-school check-ins help families identify concerns early.  She recommends that parents “trust your gut and have your child checked out if you have any concerns with their development.” Tammy can help children meet developmental milestones at any age as well as help improve gross motor skills, balance, and coordination.

Although Tammy sees patients of all ages, she is quick to point out why children need a specialized approach, “kids’ bodies are different from adults, and their development, pain, and injuries need to be treated differently. I focus on the development of a child’s musculoskeletal system and I pay special attention to how the entire system is working.”

Tammy Darby moved to Huntsville with her young family in 2021 from a thriving physiotherapy practice in Calgary as well as having practiced internationally in Hong Kong.  Tammy is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Masters in Physical Therapy program and is trained in acupuncture and pediatric pelvic health.

Tammy also helps children struggling with toileting or incontinence issues. “It’s a unique offering for children in the Muskoka area.  Many moms seek pelvic health care at Physio Works and now we can help their children too!” Concerns like bedwetting, daytime incontinence, constipation, fecal leakage or pain with toileting are issues that Tammy helps young people overcome. Tammy Darby clarified, “What I do for pediatric pelvic health is a non-invasive, external treatment. I help parents learn new habits and activities that help their child be successful.”

Tammy provides a fun, play-based, and family-focused approach and makes sure every child’s physiotherapy treatment is tailored to best meet their needs.  Parents are involved in every step of the process during appointments and during home practice. Tammy sees children suffering from growth injuries or overuse injuries, “I work with families to treat pains that just don’t go away in little people.” Overall, the goal is to help a child during their “growing up years” making sure that mobility and coordination are supported and developmental milestones are met and injuries treated.

For young athletes, Tammy can assist with rehabilitation post-injury. She is well-versed in treating young athletes from a variety of sports and for a variety of injuries. She particularly enjoys working with families to create programs that enhance performance and “pre-hab” plans to prevent injuries from happening in the first place. Tammy teaches young people how to use flexibility, strength and control to enjoy their activities more and return to sports quicker.

Tammy’s superpower is creating instant rapport with young people by keeping visits fun and engaging. “It’s important to find out what children are excited about and build it into your sessions” Darby added, “it’s one small way to help kids look forward to physio.”
