A 40-year-old man has been fined and placed on probation after pleading guilty to trafficking contraband and trespassing at a federal correctional facility.
Jason Marsh entered the plea in a Bracebridge courtroom in connection with an incident at Beaver Creek Institution last summer.
Court heard that on Aug. 30, 2025, at about 10:02 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police received a call from the institution reporting a suspicious person on the property. Staff had recovered three packages that had been thrown over the perimeter fence and advised police that the suspect was believed to be on foot.
Officers searched the area and located Marsh a short time later, hiding in a shed on Reay Road, where he was arrested without incident.
According to the facts presented in court, the three seized packages contained a total of more than 1.2 kilograms of tobacco along with multiple cellphones and phone chargers. The first package held 351 grams of tobacco with a cellphone and charger, the second contained 529 grams of tobacco with a phone and charger, and the third included 333 grams of tobacco along with another phone and charger.
Contraband such as tobacco and unauthorized communication devices are prohibited within correctional institutions due to security concerns.
Marsh was sentenced to a $2,500 fine and 12 months of probation.
