OPP remind motorists to drive safe this winter and watch for wildlife

As winter weather settles across the province, the Central Region Headquarters of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding drivers that safety starts behind the wheel.

Snow, ice, and reduced visibility can make driving hazardous, and wildlife on rural roads adds another layer of risk. Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent collisions and keep everyone safe.

Winter Driving Tips

  • Install Winter Tires: The proper tire for the right season gives better traction on snow and ice. Keep a shovel, ice scraper, and blanket in your car.
  • Slow Down & Increase Following Distance: Snow and ice increase stopping distances. Give yourself extra space to react.
  • Watch for Black Ice: Invisible ice often forms early mornings and evenings, especially on bridges and shaded areas.
  • Avoid Cruise Control: Slippery conditions require full control of your vehicle.
  • Clear Your Vehicle: Remove all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof before driving.
  • Plan Ahead: Check weather and road conditions on https://511on.ca before heading out.

Wildlife Awareness

  • Stay Alert in Rural Areas: Deer and other animals are most active at dawn and dusk. Scan the road and shoulders ahead.
  • Use High-Beams Wisely: When safe, high-beams can help spot animals sooner, but dim them for oncoming traffic.
  • If You See an Animal: Slow down, stay in your lane, and avoid swerving. Collisions often occur when drivers lose control trying to avoid wildlife.
  • Report Hazards: If you encounter a large animal on the roadway, call 1-888-310-1122 to notify the OPP.

Members of the Central Region OPP are committed to public safety and proactive policing in partnership with our communities. Your vigilance behind the wheel helps keep our roads safe for everyone this winter.

If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911. To report unlawful activity, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or visit http://www.crimestopperssdm.com.

Stay safe, drive smart, and watch for wildlife this winter.
