Huntsville OPP advises stormy weather ahead

The Huntsville OPP are alerting motorists of a snowstorm moving into the area beginning Thursday and possibly continuing into the weekend.

Snow is expected to begin on Thursday, bringing hazardous conditions starting in Parry Sound area coming across into our region. Snowfall amounts may reach up to 15-30 cm. Visibility could be reduced at times due to heavy and blowing snow.

Travel plans should be adjusted to account for these conditions. Allow extra time for travel and check road conditions before heading out. Slow down, plan, and prepare for delays. The conditions will not adapt to your driving, rather you must adapt to the conditions.

If you do have to be on the roads:

  • Check 511on.ca or local media for road conditions or closures
  • Ensure your fuel tank is full, top up your windshield washer fluid and have an emergency travel kit (food, blanket, candle, extra cell phone battery) in case you are stranded or stuck.
  • Clear snow from your entire vehicle, including and head and tail lights. Do a circle check of your vehicle whenever you stop as snow will accumulate and obscure your brake and tail lights
  • SLOW DOWN, leave extra space, keep your eyes on the road ahead
  • Make sure your full lighting system on. Don’t assume that you will automatically have lights. Your lights can help to ensure other drivers can see you.
  • Do not assume town roads will be safer than the highway, so same rules apply: Slow Down, Watch for icy intersections.

If you encounter a closed roadway, do not ravel on it. It may be impassable or the scene of a collision. Follow marked detours when posted.

Do not pass an operating snow plow. They are working to make that road safer for you.
