On Friday, June 16, YWCA Muskoka welcomed members of the public to a very exciting announcement that will enable the YWCA to deliver Girlz Unplugged programs for the next three years to girls in grades 5 to 8 at Muskoka elementary schools.

MPP Norm Miller and Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Grant Review Team member Richard Corcelli were on hand to congratulate YWCA Muskoka on receiving  a GROW grant from OTF for $303,000.  We also heard more about one of Canada’s longest running girls program and what this means for local girls.

“I’m very pleased to take part in today’s celebration. Having learned about the Girlz Unplugged program in the past, I was happy to learn that the YWCA had been awarded a GROW grant to help them include more young woman in the Muskoka region. By building the confidence of our young women, Girlz Unplugged is empowering them with the tools and resilience they will need to tackle future challenges,” said Norm Miller, MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka.

Girlz Unplugged is a 12-week program that takes place during recess and nutrition break for girls in grades 5-7.  The program focuses on self- esteem, healthy relationships, coping skills and increasing body image and confidence. Stacey Schat, Youth Programs Coordinator explains, “Girlz Unplugged creates a safe place for girls where they can explore the world around them, ask big questions and support each other through times of transition.”

“The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation GROW grant cannot be underestimated,” said Hannah Lin, YWCA Muskoka Executive Director. “Last year we were fundraising in the community to keep this program in as many schools as we could. This grant affirms the evidence we’ve accumulated over several years, now we can confidently tell girls Girlz Unplugged is still there for you.”

YWCA Muskoka champions positive change for women and girls. We envision all women and girls thriving in a safe community of possibility. For more information about YWCA Muskoka and Girlz Unplugged programs, please visit the website at www.ywcamuskoka.com
