Northeast Region

Fire update – August 15

There are currently 34 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region. Of these, 1 is being held, 5 are under control and 28 are being observed. Smoke drift from wildland fires in northern Quebec along the eastern side of James Bay is affecting air quality across the Northeast Region.

Two new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by the early evening today:

  • Cochrane 50 is located approximately 11 kilometers west of Lake Abitibi. This 0.5 hectare fire is being held.
  • Hearst 13 is located approximately 4 kilometers southwest of the community of Opasatika. It is 0.1 hectares and is under control.

Fires of note
  • There are no fires of note for the Northeast Fire Region at this time.

Northwest Region

Fire update – August 15

At the time of this update, there are 37 active fires in the Northwest Region. Of those fires, 2 are not under control, 3 fires are being held, 6 fires are under control and 26 fires are being observed.

One additional fire was confirmed following the previous update during the evening hours of August 14:

  • Nipigon 106 is located on Kelvin Island near Moose’s Harbour in Lake Nipigon. The 0.1 hectare fire is currently being observed.

There were no new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the late afternoon of August 15.

The wildland fire hazard is a patchwork of low to extreme across the Northwest Region this afternoon. While the majority of the region is in the moderate to high range, the hazard is low in the Far North and east of Sioux Lookout. A few pockets of extreme hazard remain around Slate Falls Nation Reserve and north of Geraldton toward Ogoki Lake.

Much of the Northwest Region is currently being impacted by smoke drift from active fires in Western Canada.

Northwest Fires of Note
  • There are no fires of note in the Northwest Region at this time.

Restricted fire zones
