Notes from the Huntsville Community Choir: Humanity sings

By Peeter Sild (from the bass section)

The Huntsville Community Choir’s 2016-2017 season opens Friday, December 2 at Trinity United Church with “Christmas Magic”

Imagine . . . just imagine standing amongst a crowd of singers. A current of nervous energy running through the group. Some know it as butterflies in the stomach. Everyone strives to find the right balance of attention. Too laid back, there will not be passion and energy in the performance; too focused and the voice can tighten up and betray you.

The murmur of voices from the audience begins to dwindle, the choir director takes charge as a moment of silence punctuates the hall. The director raises his hands to signal the beginning of the concert. An explosion of sound erupts in the hall as the choir begins to sing.

We have been rehearsing for many weeks all to prepare for this moment. A moment felt by many performers in every concert. I begin to think on how this was felt by all those singers who came before and all those who will follow. For myself, it now serves as a connection for me with humanity.

Songs are part of every country throughout this planet whether the “songs of nature ” or the “songs of people “. I am humbled by this very thought. The evolution of society marked by the wealth of songs and culture, not the wealth of commerce.

Ever more profound to me is the thought of singing a choral arrangement of O Magnum Mysterium, first performed in 1572 and countless times since. Over this span of history many voices have followed these notes that I am about to sing. Another thread woven into the fabric of society.

I take a deep breath . . . humanity sings.
