New beginner-friendly book on AI risk and safety

A new beginner-friendly book on artificial intelligence (AI) risk and safety has been released by author Darren McKee

Darren McKee

Uncontrollable: The Threat of Artificial Superintelligence and the Race to Save the World explores the power and peril of advanced AI using compelling analogies suitable for diverse audiences.

AI has become a defining issue of the modern era, and like any new technology, comes with both opportunity and risk.

Cutting-edge developments in healthcare, including tools to more effectively detect cancer, have been made possible by AI. On the other hand, AI has also enabled nefarious deepfakes, displaced workers, and discriminated against certain groups of people.

As the technology becomes more sophisticated and more capable, its risks are amplified.

“There is a significant disconnect between the rapidly increasing capabilities of advanced AI systems and the public’s understanding of them,” said McKee. “My objective with this book is to empower any and all citizens to take action to ensure safe AI systems are built, and that we all have a say in the type of future we want to build.”

McKee’s book serves as a call to action and provides a clear, comprehensive account of the current state of AI development while inspiring hope for a better future.

Readers and concerned citizens can expect to receive actionable suggestions to personally contribute to the improvement of AI safety.

McKee is a senior policy advisor. He also sits on the Board of Advisors for the leading AI safety and governance network in the country.
