Muskoka teams kick-off their summer season

Muskoka’s soccer clubs are back in action for their outdoor season, with various rep teams kicking off their outdoor play and house league matches taking place in Bracebridge and Huntsville.

The Doppler will have weekly roundups on the Muskoka United FC youth teams competing in various divisions this season. Plus, we’ll have the Muskoka 045 Men’s team, and adult house league results.

The MUFC U17 Boys team is now 1-3 in Ontario Soccer I-Model qualifying action after their two home matches at Gostick Park in Bracebridge this week. On May 24, they had an exciting come-from-behind 4-3 win over Aurora. Down 2-0, Dante Occhiuzzi opened the scoring, before Aiden Smith scored two, and Jackson Thomas added the clincher.

On May 29, the U17 Boys fought hard at Gostick Park against Thornhill, and Muskoka goalkeeper Alex Rasmussen was a standout performer as he kept his team in the game with several key saves. Unfortunately, the visiting team snuck in a goal and went home with a 1-0 win.

Ontario Soccer’s I-Model sees teams from throughout the province compete in regional qualifiers before splitting in Divisions C1, C2, or C3 for their regular seasons.

The MUFC U15 Boys team took place in a pre-qualifying division and kicked off their C3 campaign at Gostick Park in Bracebridge on May 28. They were edged out 3-2 by Markham Black but showed great resilience by coming back after giving up a couple of goals and came very close to tying the game in the closing stages. Muskoka’s goals were scored by Callum Leese and Carter Ferrara.

U15 Boys head coach Steve McCallum says he is pleased with the effort his team showed, especially in the second half of the game as they pushed to get a positive result.

The MUFC U15 Girls, playing in a U16 division, beat Barrie 1-0 on the road to start their season on May 26. Andi Stevenson scored for Muskoka with Oakley COLLIS and Emma WILTON sharing the clean sheet in net. Up next is a trip to North Bay to take on Nipissing District SC on June 2.

The MUFC U14 Girls also had a 1-0 away win over Barrie in their season opener on May 21. Cali Commison scored for Muskoka with Kaelyn Doughty and Kaley Verheye splitting the clean sheet in goal.

The U14 Girls then travelled to North Bay to take on Nipissing District SC on May 28 and came away with another 1-0 victory. Commison scored again, while Doughty and Lochlann Menard split the clean sheet in net. Their next match is in Collingwood on June 4.

“The girls played awesome,” said assistant coach Kate Kerr via text. “Super steady, making great passing plays and staying calm under pressure.”

The MUFC U11 Girls kicked off their season on Monday, May 26 at Pollington Field in Huntsville, losing a tough match 1-0 to Wasaga Beach. They’re in action next at Pollington Field on June 2 against Nipissing (North Bay).

On the old-timers’ side of things, the Muskoka O45 team won their season opening match 3-2 against the Barrie Packers on Wednesday night in Bracebridge. Graham Thompson led the way with two goals and Branko Hamer added the other. Up next, they have an away game at Orillia on June 6.

The Huntsville Women’s League kicked off their season this week on Monday, May 26 at Conroy Park. The popular league is now in its fourth season with the players always excited to get the ball rolling.

In Week 1 action, Muskoka Marshmallo Company edged out SportLab 1-0 in a very competitive battle, while Muskoka Tea Company fought to a 3-1 victory of On The Docks Pub. Player of the Match awards were presented to Sandra Bauer Heinz, Catriona Boyd, Cate Lamb and Natalie Juszczak.

The women’s league plays every Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Conroy Park.
