Muskoka Soccer Round-Up: U17 Girls win Gold!

The Muskoka United Football Club (MUFC) U17 Girls team travelled to St. Thomas this past weekend and brought home gold from the tournament.

This year, the U17 team was without a local district division to participate in, but they still wanted to practice and compete, so the coaches decided to form a tournament team for them.

Having already gone to a couple of tournaments previously to gain experience, the girls were ready for a breakthrough.

It came this weekend at the St. Thomas SoccerFest event.

The MUFC Girls took down the hosts 3-0 in the opening match on Saturday, then tied Dorchester Soccer Club 1-1, before smashing Portuguese London Club 5-0 to wrap up the round robin.

In the semi-finals, MUFC faced off against Portuguese London Club again, but this time, a much tighter game ended with a 2-1 victory for Muskoka.

In the final, the U17 Girls took down Dorchester 2-0 in what could only be described as a feisty game to claim the title.

The Muskoka team that won the tournament was composed of goalkeeper Rosie Creasor (who had three shutouts), Kate Pollington, Ellie Lefebvre, Bella Bondon, Maisy Moore, Sarah McKay, Maddy Allison, Clair Allison, Koran Macdonald, Jamie deMos, Olivia Dash, Sofia Cruz, Sienna Geletta, Andy Stevenson, and Lucy Guy. Matt McKay and Chuck Lefebvre coach them.

“The girls played fantastic,” says McKay. “That last game got chippy and they held their composure.”

I-Model Teams

The U17 Boys team travelled down to Markham to take on Unionville on July 24, only to have their game cancelled at halftime due to a thunderstorm. A make-up date will be determined later in the I-Model C2 season.

Their next match is a home date on Thursday against Thornhill at Gostick Park before heading to the Champions Showcase event in Ottawa this weekend.

The U15 Boys team had their July 23 game against Kleinburg Nobleton rescheduled due to weather related concerns. It will be made up at the end of the season.

Their next match is on Wednesday away to Stouffville.

The U14 Girls bounced back from their first loss of the year with a resounding 4-2 win over Barrie on July 23 at McCulley South Field 1 in Huntsville.

Their next match is on August 13 in Bracebridge against Collingwood.

The U11 Girls won their second game in a row with a great team effort in a storm-delayed 5-3 victory over Collingwood United.

The girls did it with great passing, defence, and goaltending according to coach Dan Gibbons. Mackenna Gibbons scored twice with Jane Holik, Marlowe Kerr, and Josephine Whitfield adding the others for MUFC.

Their next match is on August 11 away to the Bradford Wolves.

The U9 Girls had a bye week with their next match coming against Barrie on July 29 at Pollington Park in Huntsville.

Oldtimers still in first

The Muskoka Over 45 men’s team remains in first place after a 4-2 victory over Orillia on July 23 under the lights at Gostick Park in Bracebirdge.

It was a humid, hot night that could have used a good rain, but even as temperatures caused a few tempers to flare, the game didn’t dissolve into anything untoward.

That was a combination of good work by the teams and the solid officiating crew led by centre ref Jim Mataija, who kept the mood friendly and fun.

The old timers received goals from Jeff Young, Graham Thompson, Mike Van Den Bos, and Branko Hamer in the Huronia District Soccer League (HDSL) victory.

They are now looking ahead to huge away match-up coming this Thursday against third-place Nottawasaga, who are the defending HDSL League and Cup Champions.
