Small Business Week

Muskoka Small Business Week, October 19-23, includes Huntsville Tech Fair

Muskoka’s 2nd annual Open for Business Expo is bigger and better this year, with a new venue, more exhibitors, and more to offer the visiting public. The event will take place Tuesday October 20, from 3pm-7pm at Muskoka Riverside Inn, 300 Ecclestone Drive in Bracebridge and will feature approximately 35 new businesses from all across Muskoka. It’s the first in a series of events for Small Business Week, Oct. 19-23, and is part of a larger initiative called Muskoka Biz Series.

Small business and shopping local are closely tied together in Muskoka, and Open for Business Expo is a great opportunity for people who understand the important contribution made to the local economy by small business to connect with businesses that specialize in serving the local market. Exhibitors will represent a wide variety of sectors, so shoppers will be able to find most anything they need, whether it be a tradesperson, yoga studio, spa, bookkeeper, or products such as firewood, footwear, paddles and Muskoka chairs. Many exhibitors will be offering show specials, and some very exciting door prizes will be available as well.

Open for Business Expo 2015 is once again hosted by Business Enterprise Resource Network, Muskoka Futures, and Muskoka Small Business Centre. This year the event is supported by a number of local sponsors as well, most notably the platinum sponsor Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre which operates as part of Georgian College through all their campuses, including Muskoka. David Brushey, Executive Director of Muskoka Futures, gave some background on the evemnt: “The host organizations launched the Open for Business Expo as a way to promote new businesses in Muskoka and to support them in the early years of operation.” Information on all sponsors, along with a complete listing of exhibitors is available at www.openforbusinessexpo.ca.

The week of October 19-23 is the celebration of Small Business Week across the country. Muskoka has a jam-packed week of events for business and people interested in business, all organized as part of the Muskoka Biz Series. In addition to Open for Business Expo, events include a Women’s Business Networking event, an Intelligent Communities Forum, a Ted Talk on robotic drones, and an after-hours business networking event open to all. There is even something for kids – a free, Hands-on Tech Fair for Youth & Young at Heart on October 20 from 6pm-8pm at the Huntsville Public Library – which will focus on new technologies such as robotics, doodlers, greenscreen, and 3D printing. Information on all events planned for Small Business Week can be found at www.muskokabizseries.ca.
