Muskoka Seniors staff, volunteers, clients, board members, and friends gathered to celebrate the organization’s 35th anniversary at a special luncheon held on September 9.
“Today is all about honouring the journey that’s brought us here. Recognizing the many people and partners that have shaped our work, and looking forward to the future that we are all building together,” said Muskoka Seniors Executive Director Jenn Pfrimmer, as she welcomed those in attendance.
“It began with a ripple. One woman and a small group of supportive people in September of 1990. What started as an idea has grown into a thriving network of care,” said Pfrimmer, who explained that the theme of the occasion was a ‘Sea of Strength’ inspired by coral, the traditional gift for a 35th anniversary. However, she quipped that going to a place with coral was likely a much better gift than receiving a piece, to laughter from the audience.
“For 35 years, Muskoka Seniors has been quietly building a coral reef of care. This living network of meals, of rides, of visits and connections, helps older adults across North Muskoka remain in the homes that they love, supported by their community, like a coral reef that softens the blows of the waves and protects life along the shore. Muskoka Seniors has grown layer by layer, through the compassion of volunteers, through the generosity of donors, and the resilience of the seniors that we serve.” She said the organization started with just one vehicle and now has five, which allows clients to run errands and attend important medical appointments out of town.
Pfimmer said Muskoka Seniors began their friendship luncheons with about 15 people in attendance, and those gatherings have grown to as many as 140. The organization started with frozen meal delivery, and has grown to deliver both frozen and hot meals. Today, Muskoka Seniors serves more than 800 clients on an annual basis, supported by more than 125 volunteers.
Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock was also in attendance and expressed gratitude for an organization that she said represents the heart of the community. “In a town, as I think, is as beautiful and close-knit as Huntsville is, we know what truly defines us is how we care for one another. Muskoka Seniors’ services embodies that spirit every single day… with compassion, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of our older residents. From providing essential transportation and meal services to offering friendly visits and meaningful programs that combat isolation, and your work ensures that our seniors in our community are not just cared for but truly valued, which is absolutely critical,” said the mayor.
She thanked everyone involved in supporting the organization and the valuable service it provides. “And as everyone knows, this program also serves as an informal wellness check with clients to ensure their safety. It’s organizations like Muskoka Seniors’ services that remind us all of what it means to live in a caring and connected community. You make Huntsville a better place for everyone, and for that, we are sincerely grateful,” she said and presented a certificate of appreciation to the organization on behalf of council.
