Muskoka man loses licence after ditch mishap and breath test refusal

A 39-year-old Muskoka man has been fined and banned from driving after pleading guilty to impaired driving–related charges in Bracebridge court.

Matthew Kruusel pleaded guilty to impaired operation and failing to provide a breath sample following an incident on Aug. 25, 2025, in Muskoka Lakes Township.

Court heard Ontario Provincial Police were called after a report of a vehicle stuck in a ditch, with the caller stating the driver was attempting to free it. While responding, officers observed a vehicle matching the description driving along Pine Needle Road and conducted a traffic stop.

Police located a can of hard iced tea inside the vehicle. Kruusel refused to provide a breath sample and told officers he intended to delay providing a sample for as long as possible.

He was fined $2,000 and received a 12-month driving prohibition.
