Muskoka FC girls’ soccer team kicks off second season with two wins

The Muskoka Football Club (FC) U14 Girls combined team, with players from both Huntsville and Bracebridge, is off to a terrific start in their second season, winning their first two games.

For 2017, the girl’s team has advanced up to Central Soccer League (CSL) Division after a tremendous first season in 2016.

Many of the girls spent the winter training at least three days a week with the support of some very knowledgeable coaches; Scott Wood, Dino Tomassoni, Sandra O’Dell, goalie coach Gregg Napper, and trainer, Mike Hill. Winter training included technical training in the gym to perfect their skills as well as driving to the Bradford Dome once a week for turf practice. The team is looking forward to a great season after dedicating many training hours to the sport over the winter months.

The Muskoka FC U14 Girls season began on Thursday, May 18 with their first game at Gostick Park in Bracebridge against Vaughan’s F U14 Girls team. The girls played a solid game winning 2-1 with Marissa Tomassoni scoring the first goal of the first game of the season. Vaughan came back strong and tied up the game 1-1. In the second half of the game, Grace Wood kicked in the winning goal assisted by Jessica Napper. Both the Muskoka and Vaughan goal keepers had their work cut out for them, as they were stopping some great shots on net by both teams.

On Thursday, May 25, the girls played their second game against Benfica FC at Gostick Park, leading the game to a 4-1 win. The top scorer of the game was Marissa Tomassoni with two goals and Jessica Napper and Grace Wood both with one goal each. Dakota Fraser was the Muskoka team’s goalie and she did an outstanding job keeping the shots out of net.

It is the Bracebridge Soccer Tournament this weekend and the Muskoka FC U14 team are ready to keep up their winning streak. Good luck, girls!
