It’s not often a business can celebrate 80 years under the same family ownership while continuing to grow and evolve—but that’s exactly what Muskoka Auto Parts Limited has achieved.
Spanning three generations, the Dennis family has remained committed to maintaining the company’s core values while adapting to a changing industry.
“Most important is to provide service and carry on the tradition from our father, Louis Dennis. Service and customer relations was his strength,” said Paul Dennis.
The company’s roots date back to 1940, when it began in Parry Sound as Parry Sound Auto Parts—an automotive salvage and parts store operating during wartime. By 1946, a second location had opened in Huntsville under the Muskoka Auto Parts name, eventually relocating to a more prominent spot in town. In those early years, brothers Paul and David Dennis recall delivering parts by bicycle during the busy summer months, long before Highway 11 bypassed the community.
Expansion came quickly, including a third location in Blind River to support the mining industry, operating until 1958.
That same year, Louis and June Dennis became firmly rooted in Huntsville, contributing actively to the community. June supported the United Church Auxiliary, while Louis joined the Lions Club, serving as president in 1964. A talented jazz pianist, he regularly performed at local Rotary and Lions Club meetings until 1991.
As industries evolved, so did Muskoka Auto Parts. In the 1960s, the company embraced the growing snowmobile market, becoming a specialist in aftermarket parts, clothing, and accessories. It was also among the first businesses in Huntsville to introduce cross-country ski equipment, later expanding into marine products, snow and ice control equipment, and outdoor power tools.
A major milestone came in 1969 with the acquisition of the Raback Motors property on King William Street, allowing for expanded services including an automotive machine shop and small engine repair. Further renovations in 1983 enhanced operations, adding auto electric rebuilding and advanced machine shop capabilities.
In 1977, Paul and David Dennis took over the business from their father, continuing its growth with new locations across Central Ontario—including Sundridge, Minden, Lindsay, Haliburton, Bobcaygeon, Gravenhurst, Fenelon Falls, Bracebridge, North Bay, and most recently Vaughan in 2019.
The third generation joined in 2017, when Daniel Dennis came on board as General Manager, overseeing inventory, supply chain, and product management. “It’s in my blood—I grew up with it. Most important to me is maintaining the core fundamentals of the business—competitive service and added value to our local customer base, along with e-commerce. To me, this is all about legacy. I had other options coming out of university, but I loved the idea of being such an integral part of the community and carrying on the work of my family. Some of our customers have also been with us for generations—and to carry on that legacy is an honour.”
Today, Muskoka Auto Parts operates 10 locations and remains deeply connected to the communities it serves, supporting initiatives such as minor sports, scholarships, and co-op programs
With innovations like the Lou Dennis Snow and Ice Equipment division and an expanding e-commerce platform, the company continues to position itself for the future.
