Cliff Edmonstone has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for more than a decade. He’s one of 60 volunteers who deliver a hot meal to local residents Monday to Friday during the noon hour.
“It’s easy to do and the community needs it,” said Edmonstone. “You meet interesting people and hear interesting histories.”
Even though there isn’t a lot of time to chat, Edmonstone enjoys the time he has with clients. “When you walk in they’re happy to see you and chat,” he said.
Meals on Wheels’ clients range in age and are generally people who are unable to cook for themselves for various reasons. Edmonstone schedules volunteers and also interviews clients to find out what their dietary requirements are. The meals are made at the hospital to meet client’s dietary needs. “The hospital staff make substantial and nutritious meals,” he said.
Before Edmonstone retired and started volunteering, he was an engineer with Bell Canada. His territory was from the Muskoka region to the Manitoba boarder.
Edmonstone started volunteering with the organization after a friend of his said they were in need of more help. Now Edmonstone is looking to the community for help. Meals on Wheels needs additional volunteers and drivers. Volunteers are required to be available for three hours a month. “It’s not an onerous undertaking,” said Edmonstone.
