First up at Huntsville Council’s May 23 meeting was the announcement of the winners of the Mayor’s third annual art contest. One school cleaned house, with all three awards going to Huntsville Public School students.
Here are the winners (drum roll please): The Mayor’s Choice Award went to Emma Rowan in Ms. Andrea Slocombe’s Grade 4/5 class; the Curator’s Choice Award went to Kade Vink in Mme. Emily Fitzgerald’s Grade 5/6 French immersion class; and Rowan Petterson was the winner of the People’s Choice Award, also in Mme. Emily Fitzgerald’s Grade 4/5 French immersion class. “I’m excited to announce that these are the winners,” said Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison at council. “Each of these pieces will be framed and hanged in my office, along with all the others that are already there and I’m going to tell you, it’s beginning to look like a very warm and friendly place, despite the fact that I inhabit the office,” he quipped to laughter from those present.
The required themes for this year’s submissions were Canada’s 150th anniversary, Tom Thomson, The Group of Seven or Algonquin Provincial Park. Sixty-three submissions were curated by photographer Kelly Holinshead.
Award recipients were not only given recognition with loud applause but a little money, too. The winner of the Mayor’s Choice Award won $150, $75 went to the winner of the Curator’s Choice Award, and $25 to the People’s Choice Award winner.
