Man passed out with foot on brake tests positive for fentanyl

A 45-year-old Nova Scotia man has been fined and banned from driving after pleading guilty to impaired driving in a Bracebridge courtroom.

Norman Nelson, 45, of Truro, appeared in court recently, where he admitted to the offence.

Court heard that police were called by the Ministry of Natural Resources regarding a vehicle stopped on Shay Road in Huntsville.

Officers located a man passed out inside the vehicle, which was still running and sitting in a live lane of traffic. The vehicle was in drive with the brakes engaged.

Police observed Nelson with a straw in his mouth, tin foil in one hand, and a lighter in the other.

Officers were able to wake him, but court heard he was shaking uncontrollably. He was taken for further testing, and a blood sample was later obtained, which tested positive for fentanyl.

Nelson was fined $1,500 and handed a 12-month driving prohibition.
