A man caught with a significant amount of marijuana near Beaver Creek Correctional Institution in Gravenhurst was in front of a Bracebridge judge recently.
Brandon Deschamp, 29, pled guilty to possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution, stemming from an incident that occurred on March 18, 2022.
Court heard that on that day the Bracebridge OPP received a call about men trespassing on property near Campbell’s Road in Bracebridge. The area is near Beaver Creek and the caller was concerned that they might be attempting to transport contraband into the facility.
Police located Deschamp and two other men near Campbell’s Road and found him to be in possession of three large, “professionally wrapped” bags of cannabis containing 1.4 kg of marijuana, the court heard.
Deschamps’ defense lawyer said his client did not acknowledge the fact that the marijuana was in the process of being transported to the institution.
Court heard Deschamp has a criminal record and was under court orders at the time of his arrest.
He was given a suspended sentence and probation.
