A major power outage on Thursday, November 10 that affected more than 4,000 homes and left much of Huntsville in the dark was caused by a downed tree. A large maple went down on a private property in Utterson and landed on a main feeder line, according to Hydro One.
Only a handful of locations in Huntsville, running on either generators or a different part of the grid, were still with power during the outage. Restaurants and stores in Commerce Park as well as Highway 60 did a brisk business as residents sought out dinner.
Many residents were out and about getting a rare taste of Huntsville in the dark. Power was restored within a few hours .
- Most of the lights visible in downtown Huntsville from Lions Lookout were car headlights
- This Hydro One truck was seen on Highway 60 just after the power outage. It’s unknown if it was headed to determine the cause.
- Main Street Huntsville was eerily dark on Thursday evening
Power was out again this afternoon for a small number of homes north of Huntsville, due to a downed tree on Old North Road.

This tree on Old North Road took out power to almost 80 homes on November 12

Rudi Stade in answer to your question, wind was pretty strong in the Melissa area when the tree came down on Old North Road on Saturday.
The #grid is not robust.
Did somebody cut that tree down? There was no wind at all at the time of the blackout.
