Local students create dandy candy posters for Willy Wonka art project

Willy Wonka would be proud. Students in grade six, seven and eight from ten Huntsville-area schools gathered at Trinity United Church on February 14 to create giant, scrumdidilyumptious chocolate bars – not edible, alas – for the Huntsville Festival of the Arts (HFA) upcoming production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.

Three or four students from each school – Huntsville Public, Irwin Memorial, Muskoka Christian School, Muskoka Montessori School, Pine Glen, Riverside, Saint Mary’s, Spruce Glen, Tawingo College, and VK Greer – worked together to design and create colourful bars for display around town in advance of the show’s opening night on March 31.

“They were all well prepared (for the workshop),” said Carol Gibson, Chair of HFA’s Education Committee, who praised the student for their creative vision. The committee hosted a similar, successful workshop last year for the musical TEN! and chose to run it again because the project complements the art and marketing components in the students’ curriculum.

A member of the musical’s production team was on hand to talk to the students about the process of creating props and brought a giant gate, one that looks sturdy but is made of styrofoam, to show not all as it often appears on stage.

Opening night for HFA’s production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is Friday, March 31 with a total of six performances culminating with a matinee on Sunday, April 9. Tickets can be purchased at the Algonquin Theatre or online at www.huntsvillefestival.on.ca.
