Muskoka’s Natural Environment and Built Heritage Charities benefit from Muskoka Community Foundation’s Smart & Caring Muskoka Grants

The Muskoka Community Foundation (MCF) celebrated National Philanthropy Day (November 15) by granting $6,000 from the Smart & Caring Muskoka Fund to four Muskoka charities. The recipients of the grants were Muskoka Conservancy, Newholm Community Heritage Centre & Friends of Holy Trinity Newholm, Huntsville Train Station Society, and Muskoka Watershed Council together with the District Municipality of Muskoka and the Friends of the Muskoka Watershed.

Isobel Heathcote, President of the Muskoka Conservancy, said, “We’re very excited to receive this funding from the Muskoka Community Foundation, which will help to support a broader range of activities for the Little Sprouts (kids 3-7) and extend the reach of the program in our region.”

John Rivière-Anderson, Communications Officer, Board of Directors Newholm Community Heritage Centre, said, “This funding will be used to provide the drawings that will permit our Newholm pioneer church of 126 years to be given permanent foundations and four-season use by our community.”

“Thanks to Smart and Caring Muskoka Fund, we can now move forward with improving both the air distribution and insuring better control of humidity,” said Lucille Frith, President, Huntsville Train Station Society (HTSS).

“Muskoka’s environment is sensitive and under increasing pressures from invasive species such as Phragmites. The Smart & Caring Muskoka funding will assist with education, awareness, and action on this critical issue,” said Christy Doyle, Director of Environmental & Watershed Programs for the District of Muskoka & Muskoka Watershed Council.

Since it was founded in 2007 the Muskoka Community Foundation has granted over $213,900 directly to a variety of registered charities throughout Muskoka. You can learn more about the Foundation on their website: www.muskokacommunityfoundation.ca.
