YWCA Muskoka is celebrating the new year by acknowledging the generosity of local businesses in supporting programs and services for girls. In October, YWCA Muskoka put out an appeal to support their Girlz Unplugged program and that call was answered by individuals and businesses across the region.

Four local Huntsville-based businesses have pledged donations of $500 per year for the next three years:

  • Scott Morrison and Brent Stapleton, owners of Coldwell Banker Thompson Realty
  • BDO Chartered Professional Accountants – Huntsville Office
  • Dave Cork, of Davicor Construction
  • Doctors Rich and Deb Trenholm

“I’ve been inspired by the work YWCA Muskoka is doing for young girls and women in our community. When I heard how big the funding shortfall was for Girlz Unplugged, I felt compelled to help out,” said Scott Morrison of Coldwell Banker Thompson Realty who championed the cause with his local business associates.

These four local businesses have been joined by the organizers of Muskoka Kids Tri who have offered to make Girlz Unplugged the designated charity cause for this year’s event.

Together the group has raised enough funds to fully fund one school based Girlz Unplugged program this term. YWCA Muskoka has developed and delivered Girlz Unplugged to girls ages 10 to 13 in Muskoka schools for over 16 years. Girlz Unplugged is designed to build positive peer relationships among girls; develop self-esteem and confidence while exploring healthy relationships, body image, gender stereotypes and the importance of being media savvy in a changing world.

“We’re thrilled with the generosity of these businesses,” says Hannah Lin, Executive Director, “We’re very grateful to Scott for his support in sharing our story and helping others get involved.”
