On Saturday, December 9, the Huntsville Public Library FIRST LEGO robotics team competed in the regional competition in North Bay against 23 other teams.
This was the first year the library has offered this national program for kids ages 9-14. Members of The Tech Team — Jocelyn Avdeeff, Andrew Dussault, Wyatt Heffernan, Cole Strickland, Sophia Webster and Blake Willms — had an amazing day placing 12th in the robotics challenge.
“I am so proud of what the team was able to accomplish together in the challenge this year. We learned so much together and I can’t wait to see where we go next year!” says coach Cortney LeGros.
The team met every Thursday evening beginning in September and unveiled their robot Rover at the Youth Tech Extravaganza in October. The team researched real world solutions to this year’s Hydrodynamics challenge, including designing a natural filter to treat stormwater runoff.
“This was an amazing opportunity for the library to offer a new program, engage with youth in our community and compete in a national technology program. I am proud of Cortney for her new program idea and can’t believe how well the team did this season,” says Deborah Duce, CEO and Chief Librarian.
FIRST LEGO League inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators. It is so much more than just robotics, and teaches self-confidence, communication and leadership all while competing in Core Values judging, design challenges, engineering competitions and real-world problem solving. This was an amazing experience for all of the kids, and adults involved! The kids rose to each of the challenges under the leadership of Cortney and Denise. So many life long learning skills were used -perseverance, effort, trial and error, how to deal with set backs, how to work with others and how to problem solve among many ohers. Our Huntsville library did an excellent job supporting these kids. We are blessed to have this resource in our community. Thank you!
