Once again the Huntsville Lake of Bays firefighters are donning their gear and running one of the most grueling race courses around, all in the name of charity and team spirit.

Just like in past years the firefighters will take to the Band on the Run race course on June 11 in their firefighting gear. However, unlike previous years where the firefighters ran the 5km course, they say this year they will run a kilometre for every $1,000 raised for charity. They are hoping (or maybe not) that $10,000 will be pledged.

We call it K for K, so for every $1,000 raised firefighters will run one kilometre with full gear on. We’re hoping for 10 (kilometres) and $10,000 for Habitat.Fire Chief Stephen Hernen

The charity of choice this year is Habitat for Humanity and for the fifth year in a row Bob Bulloch, an ardent supporter of the community, has kicked off the fundraising with a $1000 donation. In happily presenting the cheque Bob said he enjoys supporting the firefighters because they participate and get involved in their fundraising efforts. With the help of the firefighters in raising awareness and community spirit, the Band on the Run event has raised over $27,000 for local charities in the last four years.

It’s hard to argue with that. The firefighters actively train year around and are up to the challenge. It’s a good thing too, because almost $4,000 has been raised already. The Firefighters’ pledge page is linked here.

The firefighters will also be holding a charity car wash this Saturday (May 21) in the Canadian Tire Store parking lot from 9:00 to noon. Proceeds will be added to the kilometre challenge.
