Community members will gather later this month for the annual Legacy for Alex Kerswell Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction, an event dedicated to supporting local youth through housing, mental health services and educational opportunities.
The fundraiser will take place on June 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Terry Fox Auditorium in Gravenhurst. Proceeds from the event will be directed to Alex’s Place in Bracebridge, MiND-AID Muskoka and the Legacy for Alex Gravenhurst High School Bursary Fund.
Alex’s Place, a 12-unit transitional housing program for youth aged 16 to 24 experiencing homelessness, has been one of the primary beneficiaries of the fundraiser in recent years. The facility, which opened in 2022, provides life-skills development, crisis management, housing support and access to mental health services.
According to program staff, donations from Legacy for Alex have helped create a trauma-informed environment for residents while supporting food security initiatives and educational programming. Funding has also been used to purchase supplies for activities that teach practical life skills, including budgeting and financial planning.
MiND-AID Muskoka will also receive funding from the event. The organization supports youth and families by helping them navigate the mental health system and connect with appropriate services. Funds raised will help support programs, including its mobile youth wellness hub, mental health navigation services and access to specialized therapy for local youth.
A portion of the proceeds will also support the Legacy for Alex Gravenhurst High School Bursary Fund. The bursary assists graduating students pursuing post-secondary education and recognizes those who have demonstrated resilience and perseverance while overcoming challenges during their high school years.
Organizers encourage residents to reserve their seats by June 12. Those unable to attend the event can still support the cause by making a donation through the Legacy for Alex website.
