Law students: applications are open for Mark’s Ride scholarship

For the third year in a row, family and friends of Mark Reid, a local lawyer who died in August 2015, will honour his memory by presenting a scholarship in his name to a local law student. Reid loved his profession and cycling was one of his favourite pastimes, so just weeks after his death friends hastily organized a charity ride in his name with proceeds going to the scholarship fund. The ride has continued every September since.

Applications for this year’s scholarship close on July 15.

Residents of Muskoka who are entering law school or continuing law school in September are eligible to apply. They are required to submit a letter of no more than 600 words that describes themselves, their lives, their experiences, their hopes for their future and their interests both in and outside of law.

The scholarship is awarded to the applicant the selection committee considers most worthy, based on their letter and the committee’s understanding of the values Mark Reid found most important.

This year’s fundraiser will not be a bike ride—the Ministry of Transportation has told organizers that there is too much road construction on the highways in the planned route for them to grant a permit. Instead, there will be a Mark’s Ride outdoor concert on August 18 featuring Canadian musician, Craig Cardiff. The concert will include a BBQ, raffles and a silent auction. If you ride your bike to the event, your name will be included in a draw for a prize. Anyone who wants to donate to Mark’s Ride can contact Carrie Campbell at [email protected].
