The post office used to be almost a biblical institution. I remember in the 60’s they managed to deliver a Toronto Star newspaper to us before lunch time on the day of publication, 6 days a week.
Rural delivery was almost always accomplished by about 11 am.
They ran 6 days a week.
It was like clockwork and delivery to the GTA from Dwight was almost always within one day, two at most ant that included most of southern Ontario. The USA just a day or two more.
Now, nothing seems to arrive in less than three days. USA is sometimes up to three weeks for delivery (probably not Canada Post’s fault here)
Rural delivery, despite our cheerful delivery person’s efforts, often does not happen until well after noon and on some days not at all, seemingly at random.
They are open 5 days a week.
Delivery of a Toronto Star by mail is not only laughable in concept but will take three days to accomplish and that is if you can arrange to find someone at the Star who will actually mail it to you.
So…… things have gone electronic. Sometimes for the much better but not always.
Governments loves email, I’m thinking because it goes direct to the person involved maybe.
On the other hand some government issues seem to be excessively complex. As soon as some government site asks you to “create an account” and a “password” you know your heading down an endless rabbit hole.
If we could manage to make email work easily for most everything we could almost dispense with Canada Post.
They had a lock on parcels and mail in the beginning but somehow, even with all their infrastructure and government financial help, they have lost that market to the package delivery companies UPS, Fedex Purolator etc.
Now Canada Post is best known for “junk mail”
This is not all bad as I heat a lot with wood and junk mail is a nice source of fuel, delivered to my door for free!
Bottom line here I think is that Canada Post needs to be four things to survive.
RELIABLE
FAST
CONVENIENT
CHEAP
these in order of importance. If they can’t do this then they will be gone in the next decade and strikes will become irrelevant.
I think the way Canada Post has been going, the Township and all the rest of us would be well advised to find other ways to run our business. I know my resort now uses Canada Post for maybe only 10% of what we used to use it for. Most of our business is done electronically now.
It’s time for this government to make Canada Post an essential service. Enough already.
