From the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation
The Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce its support of two students pursuing post-secondary education.
The recipients of the Harriet T. Weaver Bursaries for 2025 are local high school graduates Paige Johnson-Shirley of Huntsville High School, and Harper Gibbs of Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School. They will each receive a gift of $1000 towards their studies in Environmental & Earth Sciences at McMaster University, and Education and History at Nipissing University, respectively.
“Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation (LBHF) takes pleasure in the Harriet T. Weaver Bursaries, thanks to an endowment supported by Brink Weaver and many other donors. The bursaries have increased since our first awards in 2014 and we trust that will continue,” said LBHF president Margaret Casey.
The Bursaries are awarded annually to a graduating student from each of Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School and Huntsville High School who are accepted for study at a college or university in a subject related to LBHF activities. The awards were made possible thanks to an initial endowment from Harriet’s son Brink, a former president of the Lake of Bays Association.
Paige commented that she is “very grateful to the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation for this bursary and opportunity. It supports my studies in wildlife conservation and helps me work toward protecting ecosystems and biodiversity. I hope to give back by contributing to the preservation of Muskoka’s environment, which has deeply influenced me to pursue this field of study.”
Harper said “I would like to sincerely thank the Lake of Bays Foundation for awarding me this generous bursary. Your support means so much to me and my family as I take the next step in my education. This assistance not only eases financial stress but also motivates me to continue striving toward my goals. I am truly grateful for your belief in my potential and investment in my future.”
Founded in 1985, the LBHF is a community-based non-profit that protects the natural and community heritage of the Lake of Bays area. Operated by a volunteer board, the Foundation conserves land, protects habitats, offers nature programs for all ages and documents community histories. It stewards 317 acres of land including 8.3 kilometers of shoreline. LBHF is a member of the Ontario Land Trust Alliance.
