At its April 9 meeting, Lake of Bays Council approved the implementation of an Environmental Projects Grant Program to support community individuals and organizations undertaking projects that enhance water quality and ecosystem health in the Township.
According to a report submitted to the Council by municipal staff, $10,000 from the municipality’s operating budget has been set aside for the program in 2024. Grants will comprise $500 for small projects and $1,000 per project to “support projects that contribute to the preservation or enhancement of biodiversity within ecosystems or $5,000 per project for broader initiatives that “protect, restore, or manage watershed health and water quality.”
Examples of the type of projects that could qualify for a grant include:
- Native plant restoration and landscape conservation projects: Initiatives focused on the restoration of native plant species and natural landscapes, the removal of invasive species, as well as the preservation of natural plant habitats.
- Educational programs on local flora & fauna: Projects, events, or services aimed at educating the community about the importance of local plant and animal species and how to care for and cohabitate with them.
- Community gardening, green space development, and pollinator gardens: Encouraging the development of community gardens and green spaces that use native plants and native pollinator gardens to support biodiversity.
- Erosion control and sustainable water management: Projects focused on preventing erosion and runoff and using reclaimed and recycled water systems (e.g., rain barrels, cisterns, dry wells, rain gardens) to help increase water retention and reduce the effects of increased precipitation.
