Huntsville Council is bringing back the official recognition of individuals in the community who do great things for the town and at its December meeting it kicked off the initiative by recognizing local UFC fighter Kyle Nelson, aka the Monster.
Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock said Nelson’s name was brought forward by Councillor Scott Morrison who noted that his nickname Monster does not match Nelson’s personality.
“I know you’re originally from Huntsville and so that makes us warm and fuzzy because anytime anyone who is from here, raised here, and achieves so much as you have, that just makes us all incredibly proud,” said Alcock who read out some of Nelson’s achievements.
She said he has been representing Huntsville on a global scale since 2011 when Nelson began his mixed martial arts career. He joined the UFC in 2018 and has been successful as a result of perseverance and hard work. He is the owner of Muskoka Martial Arts in Gravenhurst where he provides programming and support for youth in the community and plans on opening a similar venue in Huntsville. ‘We’re always looking for programming for youth,” said Alcock who welcomed the initiative.
Morrison acknowledged the work that has been done by staff to bring the program back. “Everybody in this room knows Kyle and what he’s done,” said Morrison. “What people need to realize, when you make it to the UFC it’s like having someone from Huntsville make the NHL but even bigger because it’s more global so not very many people, not very many athletes, make the big show so to make that stage is out of this world incredible and it doesn’t happen without an amazing amount of discipline and dedication…”
Nelson was described as a family man. He spoke briefly at the council meeting. He thanked his parents for instilling a solid work ethic in him and driving him to training and competitions. Nelson also thanked his fiancé for helping him with his career as well as the Town of Huntsville and everyone who has supported him.
