“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”
-Terry Fox, July 10, 1980
He was a young man with a dream but Terry Fox could never have predicted then just how far people would keep going in his honour. He had a goal to raise one dollar for every Canadian – $22 million then – and 36 years later the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $700 million to fund innovative cancer research.
It wouldn’t be as successful as it is without the efforts of local volunteer groups – more than 9000 world-wide – who host community and school Terry Fox Runs every year. In Huntsville, all three run distances – 1km, 5km and 10km – start and end at Huntsville High School.
“They are the same wonderful routes that give participants great vistas of our town,” says event organizer, Bill Coon. Healthy snacks will await participants post-run.
Last year, 300 people raised almost $40,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. They were supported by just over 100 volunteers.
Each year on Terry Fox Day, I can hardly contain my pride. If people come out they will feel so proud of their town.

Will you help keep Terry’s dream going this year? There’s still time to sign up to run, walk, bike or blade any of the distances. And more volunteers are needed to help out.
“The morning of the event, we’ll need people for small set-up jobs like moving tables at about 7:30,” says Coon. “And we still need people to man a water station for a few hours.” If you can help, contact Bill Coon at [email protected] or 705-789-1785.
