May 25, 1946 – March 30, 2024
It is with great sadness that my brother and I share the sudden passing of our father, John McDonald Lacey, in Toronto at the young age of 77 on March 30th, 2024.
John was born on May 25, 1946, in Edinburgh, Scotland, moving through Scotland, England, Canada, Australia, and back to Canada in his early years, where he loyally stayed as a proud Canadian ever since. Spending most of his life in the Town of Newmarket or King City, he chose to move to the beautiful town of Huntsville, Ontario, where he proudly has lived and created a life for himself for the last 20 years. He was a loving father and loyal friend to many. He was pre-deceased by his son Jeffery Lacey, survived by his brother Philip Lacey, daughter Suzanne Bracken, son Michael Lacey, their spouses, and three grandchildren.
Among so many past times, John had an infectious dedication to the sport of hockey and, over the years, worked with many hockey leagues under the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. He spent the most time with the Newmarket, Aurora, and Orillia Minor Hockey associations, and then, during his remaining years in Huntsville, he was involved with Huntsville’s very own Huntsville Otters. His dedication to youth and hockey was unmeasurable. His involvement included being a player, a team trainer, a coach, a referee, and a supervisor, and he received a variety of certification training. He was also an educator on many topics and levels with a focus on abuse on and off the rink, causing change within the hockey community.
John was feisty but genuinely, his goal was to make golf a great sport. He had a continuous love for children and their success everywhere. In addition, he had an incredible love for golf from a young age. He has enjoyed many courses both in Huntsville and around the world, like Australia, North America, and Hawaii, to name a few. Whether he played with friends and family in tournaments or just for fun, he was always on the course in one fashion or another.
A Celebration of Life will be held this coming Saturday, June 15th, 2024, from 12 pm to 5 pm, with a structured portion between 2 pm and 3:30 pm, at the Grandview Golf Club, 245 Grandview Drive North, Huntsville, Ontario, where he proudly worked for 20 years as of this golfing season.
In lieu of flowers to honour John, work is being done to create a scholarship for a youth within the hockey community. Unfortunately, the final details are not available, but if you are interested and would like to hear more, please email Suzanne at [email protected], and I will reach out to you with the final details when available.
Thank you for all of your love and support.
