It was the great fire of 1894 that convinced the council of Huntsville (then a village) that a fire brigade was needed. For equipment, council purchased a hand fire engine, “one of the old ancient sort, the kind that would maim for life any body of men who would work on the pumps for 20 minutes steady,” according to an account in Huntsville: With Spirit and Resolve. Equipment has improved quite a bit over the years. The Town’s first motorized fire truck, which replaced a horse and wagon, was purchased in 1928.
