It’s Wayback Wednesday, sponsored by Jamie Lockwood, broker/owner of Sutton Group Muskoka Realty!
This 1906 panorama was taken from the second floor of the then-Huntsville Public School, which was located at the corner of Centre and Caroline streets. Note the barren Lookout Mountain in the distance. In June 1903, a huge fire destroyed much of the vegetation. After the blaze had been raging for three days Thomas Cullon, who served as chief of the fire brigade, tried a different tactic. He attached a hose to the hydrant located at Dr. Shearer’s house and crossed the river at the foot of Fairy Avenue with 1,000 feet of fire hose. A news report at the time said, “The brigade performed the almost inconceivable task of scaling the steep precipice on the north side, fighting the fire as they went.”
