It’s high time for tea

This Saturday, local residents can dress in their purple best for high tea at Huntsville Place Mall, all in support of Hospice Huntsville.

The annual tea party is a fundraiser for Hike for Hospice, which occurs on May 1 on Hunters Bay Trail. A big part of the party is its silent auction, with more than 180 items up for grabs.

“We have had amazing support from businesses and people in our community who have been donating items,” said Melissa Polischuk, Fundraising and PR Coordinator at Hospice Huntsville. “There’s a really wide range of items to suit anyone’s budget, from gift certificates, to overnight camp stays, to golf passes.”

Karen Markham and Judy White, two of the volunteers manning the silent auction tables, said that bidding has been going strong. You can bid on the items all day today (April 15, 9:30am-9:00pm) and tomorrow until the live auction, which runs from 2-3pm, ends.

Admission to the tea party is by donation, but arrive early – there’s only space for 120 people, and many are eager to join in the celebration. “Some people really get into the theme,” said Polischuk. “There are lots of fascinators and purple clothes.” Dressing up isn’t required, of course, but it’s part of the fun. (See the tea party poster below for full details.)

The event is being co-hosted with Huntsville Place Mall and Bear Necessities Bistro and Catering, who will be providing delicious treats for the tea.

Hospice Huntsville’s goal is to raise $55,000 for this year’s Hike for Hospice, funds that stay in our community to support Algonquin Grace Hospice. Hospice Huntsville must raise 40 per cent of its annual operating budget – more than $350,000. All of its programs are offered for free to its clients and families.

Watch for other community fundraisers, including the purple boot campaign – throw your change in to support Hospice – and purple painted pedicures.
