It takes a village to grow a farmers’ market

Various members of the Port Sydney community have come together to create the Port Sydney Farmers’ Market, which the say will be dedicated to bringing fresh, local produce and handmade goods to the village.

Running weekly from June 28 to August 30, the market will be held at an area belonging to the Smith’s Ultramar and aims to celebrate and support local farmers, artisans, and small businesses from Port Sydney, Utterson, and surrounding areas.

Organizers say the new market is all about strengthening community connections while providing residents and visitors with fresh, local options close to home.

“The goal is to bring fresh, local produce to our village,” said Jennie Seward, community activist and market manager.

“It’s also a way to connect local producers and artisans together,” added Bonnie Boyd, Director with the Port Sydney/Utterson and Area Chamber of Commerce. “Port Sydney has a lot of talent.”

Vendor offerings will include fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, maple syrup, honey, smoked meats, along with works by various artists, artisans, and authors.

“There are lots of people who can’t get to town, so it will be nice to have a farmers’ market in our own community, instead of needing to drive elsewhere,” said Seward.

The Port Sydney Farmers’ Market is a collaboration between the Port Sydney Chamber, VK Greer Parent Council, and the Port Sydney Parks and Recreation Group.

“We’re all working collaboratively as a team,” said Seward. “No one group profits from this; any proceeds will be split between the four organizations.”

The farmers’ market will also feature an initiative called the Produce Pantry, designed to help increase food access for community members. The pantry will be located at Smith’s Ultramar, where residents who grow their own food can drop off any extra produce they can’t use. Community members are invited to take what they need. Any leftover food will be collected by Seward, who will can the surplus to become part of the silent auction at the 2026 Lions Lobsterfest to help support local causes.

An information night for prospective vendors, volunteers, and interested community members will be held on Monday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Port Sydney Community Hall. Event organizers encourage anyone interested in learning more to attend.

There are a few spots remaining for vendors. Those interested in applying to be a vendor or volunteer can email [email protected].
