Huntsville’s Sport and Recreation Week: an open house for active living

Being active is important at any age. For children, it contributes to healthy development. In adults, it reduces the risk of disease and improves mental health, and in older adults it can also increase independence and reduce the risk of injury due to falls.

It may seem that there are more opportunities for children to be active, with more options for organized sport and more time to spend at play. Fortunately, in our town there’s an abundance of activities available for all ages and Huntsville’s Sport and Recreation Week, November 14-19, is a great time to get a sneak peek at all of the programs available.

“The Canada Summit Centre and the Active Living Centre are open to celebrate sport, and healthy, active living and aging,” says Simone Babineau, Manager of Recreation and Leisure Services for the Town of Huntsville. “We encourage people to come out and try something new.”

As we age, we should be trying new things that suit our current health, schedules, and abilities, says Simone.

No matter what your schedule is – if you are retired and looking for more or working and trying to fit healthy activities in – we have lots of options. And if you’re recovering from injury or needing to change the way you approach active living, we have lots to offer as well.

Sport and Rec Week offers demos, try-its and freebies for a wide range of programs so that people at all ages and stages can learn what’s available.

“Our goal is to encourage Huntsvillians to be active for life, and extend physical literacy into adulthood and older adulthood,” says Simone. “We offer a great selection of leisure, recreation and sport programs to achieve that.”

Hydrorider aquabikes

The Centennial Pool’s Hydrorider aquabikes are the latest addition to the Town’s sport and leisure offerings

Huntsville’s Sport and Recreation Week kicks off on Monday, November 14 with a special ribbon-cutting and demonstration of the Centennial Pool’s new Hydrorider aquabikes. For the rest of the week, there’s a full slate of mostly free activities like pickleball, Chi Kung, table tennis, games, ukulele, drumming, and art demos. Don’t forget to wear your favourite jersey on Friday, November 18 for Huntsville Jersey Day!

To end the week, there’s a free public skate sponsored by the District of Muskoka and a free public leisure swim sponsored by the Town of Huntsville, both on November 19 in celebration of Sports Day.

“Huntsville is already a vibrant, active community and we want to support and encourage that for everyone,” says Simone.
