People who were just starting to get used to visiting the DMan’s Burgers truck beside Kawartha Dairy on Highway 60 may be wondering where their dinner went.
DMan’s Burgers opened on July 30 to brisk business. A little slow out of the gate to take full advantage of the summer hamburger-eating weather, the owners were happy with the reception they were receiving. “People were getting used to us,” said co-owner Bill Moore. “They were stopping on their way home from work and on their way to the cottage. The Highway 60 location was good because a lot of people don’t come through town, especially in the summer time.”
Things were sizzling, but then DMan’s received a visit from a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) official and were told that they didn’t have all their permits in place and would have to shut down. Because of the proximity of the food truck to Highway 60, DMan’s required ministry approvals.
Bill says he tried everything to get the MTO to work with them. “We are employing students, we buy our buns and pop from Robinson’s and our gluten-free buns from Wheat-Free Delights. We were hoping they would see all that as a positive thing and help us.”
Bill said everyone they worked with along the way was very helpful. “Terry Clarke pointed us in the right direction. The fire department did their inspections. The health unit did their inspection. We had no problems until we were notified of our failure to satisfy the MTO.”
Are you wondering how things worked out for them?
Well, DMan’s Burgers is now located beside the Beer Store, where the MTO has no jurisdiction.
Bill and his business partner Dwayne Macdonald aren’t deterred though. They are making the most of their new location, which is nicely landscaped and has shaded picnic tables to sit at and enjoy your meal. The food truck offers hamburger fare and more – homemade burgers with all the fixings, poutine, fries, hotdogs, chili cheese dogs and grilled cheese. The most popular item on the menu is the Prime Rib Burger, made with prime rib not ground beef, which Dwayne says makes all the difference in the world. They also feature a burger of the day, such as the Vermont burger with cheddar, apple and Dijon mustard or the Hawaiian burger with ham and pineapple.
When asked what’s in store for next season, Bill and Dwayne grinned coyly and said they have big plans for next summer and they include the Highway 60 location.
Dman’s Burgers is open next to the Beer Store and Fabricare laundromat, 7 days a week, 10am to 8pm until the end of October. www.dmansburgers.ca
