The Midget Hawks just plain ran out of gas in final game of a Caledon Lacrosse Tournament this past weekend.
The Moose Delaney Midget Hawks normally carry 16 runners and two goalies. This weekend due to previous engagements, work and illness, the Midgets took nine runners and two goalies on the road to the annual Caledon B tournament.
The Hawks easily defeated the Toronto Beaches 9-2, Hamilton Bengals 8-4 , and Gloucester Griffins 6-2, to make it to Sunday’s championship game.
In the championship game the Hawks faced the Niagara on the Lake midgets, who were the Provincial Midget B Champions in 2015.
It was a close game with each team answering the other team’s goals with one of their own. The score was tied at three going into the third but the Hawk’s short bench started to tire as NOTL kept pressing the advantage of their full bench. With five minutes left to go in the game, NOTL scored. Huntsville gave all they had left but couldn’t net another goal.
The final score was 4-3 for Niagara on the Lake.
Coach Kevin Knox is really proud of how the team played especially given that they had a fairly short bench. “We didn’t have high expectations going in and we ended up going to the finals and losing by one goal”, Knox said. “Both of our goalies played extremely well. That helped keep us in it, especially after the third game when the kids were exhausted. We have a really good short-handed strategy as well. That was fairly key to our success.”
The Midget Hawk’s still have lots of regular season games coming up. To see the schedule click here.
