It’s Showtime! The Huntsville Skating Club hosted their annual year-end carnival, SHOWTIME, on Sunday, April 2, 2017 in the Don Lough arena at the Canada Summit Centre. Skating fans, friends and families all came out to the carnival to celebrate all of the club’s successes and accomplishments and to cheer on the showcase of skaters’ talents from all levels.
Performances included the youngest Pre-CanSkaters who have made their first strides on the ice this season, to CanSkaters who are skaters that are part of Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program for beginners of any age that teaches fundamental movements and basic skills for all skating based sports including figure skating, hockey, ringette and speed skating. Then the highest levels of club skaters called STARSkate which offers opportunities to develop figure skating skills in four different areas: Skills, Test, Achievement and Recognition.

A celebration was mentioned for Coach Tim White’s 40th anniversary coaching with the Huntsville Skating Club. Tim started out as a Huntsville Skating Club skater for many years and then moved on to become a coach. He coached here in Huntsville as well as other clubs including South River, Burk’s Falls, and Powassan.
Robin Brushey had this to say about Coach White: “When many of us think about the Huntsville Skating Club, we cannot go long before we think of Coach Tim. Tim is a staple of our club coaching team. We are thrilled to congratulate Tim on his achievement of 40 years as coach with our club. Faithfully he travels down from close to North Bay to coach every Monday. Never misses a session due to weather. He’s helped so many CanSkaters learn the basics, partnered thousands of dance tests, and helped lots of hockey players develop edges and turns in power skating. He’ll be impossible to replace, but luckily we know Tim will be back again next year.”
One of the carnival performances ‘Hand Clap’ by the Junior StarSkaters from Monday nights was dedicated in loving memory of Krista Russell, a special skating mom who always showed a heart full of love. Krista Russell, mother of two junior skaters Isla and Taryn Russell, passed away earlier this year. It was a memorable moment in the arena.
The Huntsville Skating Club also recognized one of their graduating skaters, Mary MacMillan. Mary has achieved triple Gold status, by completing her gold skills, gold dances and gold free skate tests with Skate Canada. This is an accomplishment that few skaters ever achieve. Congratulations!
Thank you to Kerri Vallentin (HSC President and Carnival Chair) and Coach Chrissy Mantle-Marnoch for coordinating this ‘SHOWTIME’ event, along with all of the volunteers. Great performances to celebrate another successful season.
