It was a great way to end the season. After qualifying for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) Provincials, the Huntsville Senior C Sting played six hard-fought games in the GTA from April 5-8.
In game one, the Sting met West Northumberland, a team they had played in their regular season, taking the win 3-1. Game two was a close one against Stratford, but the Sting stole the win, 3-2. In game three, Huntsville met Lucan on the ice for their toughest game yet, losing 4-1.
Their record sent them into the quarterfinals against Norfolk. Huntsville played hard to come away with a 2-1 win to put them in a semifinal game against Lucan, the only team they’d lost to in four games. The Sting maintained a one-goal lead for most of the game, coming close to a berth in the finals.
“We were winning 1-0 until three minutes left in the game and they managed to score some quick ones,” said player and Huntsville Girls Hockey Association president Kristy Vogel, of the team’s 3-1 loss to Lucan.
In the Bronze medal game, the ladies gave it their all but lost to Milverton 3-0 for a fourth place finish overall.
“We finished with a record of three wins and three losses,” noted Vogel. “I am very proud of all the players giving it their all, bruised, broken and beaten. They never stopped playing and kept the energy going.”
After a well-played and successful season, the Senior C team will rest and regroup over the summer to get ready for the 2018/19 season.
