Last night, August 20, thousands of people in communities across Canada gathered in living rooms, bars, and parks to watch a broadcast of The Tragically Hip’s final concert in Kingston, Ontario. The iconic Canadian band embarked on a 15-city, cross-country tour in July after frontman Gord Downie announced in the spring that he has terminal brain cancer. It ended where it all began for the band, in Downie’s hometown.
In Huntsville, River Mill Park was packed to capacity with people watching the show on a big screen set up in the park’s bandshell. They even watched from boats, stood on Dara Howell Way, and sat to the side of the bandshell to watch the reverse image on the back of the projection screen.
We caught up with a few of those who came out to watch:
Whether they came because they’ve been Hip fans from the start or just to appreciate the talents and success of a truly Canadian band, this will be a night to remember for those who watched. Farewell, The Tragically Hip. Thanks for the memories.
