The Huntsville Public Library Board, staff and guests gathered in the library’s Friends Room to celebrate the completion of renovations to the room and kick off the library’s Canada 150 celebrations.
The renovations – which include sound improvements, and a new projector and screen – were completed with funds from the Canada 150 Infrastructure Grant and the Huntsville Friends of the Library.
The occasion was also a bittersweet one for library staff and board members as they remembered former colleague Nigel Tappin – who died in March 2016 after a long battle with cancer – and thanked the Tappin family for their donation of four pieces of original art by local artists from his private collection.
“His mom told me that Nigel so enjoyed seeking out local artists, especially Huntsville artists, and getting to know them, encouraging them, and giving some of them their first sales,” said library board member Sue Morris.
“People have also made donations to the library in Nigel’s memory,” added Chief Librarian and CEO, Deb Duce. “Those funds will be used to purchase gallery hangings for The Annex to celebrate the talents of the artists in the district. I think Nigel would truly appreciate that.”
A variety of Canada 150 celebrations and activities have been planned at the library, including Canada 150 reads (staff-recommended Canadian books); commemorative library cards with images from the Muskoka Heritage Place archives, library archives and local artist Janine Marson; rotating displays of artifacts from Muskoka Heritage Place; and more.
