A Huntsville man whose arrest led to the lockdown of a local school was found guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom recently.
Richard Ryan, 43, was found guilty on numerous charges, including possession of fentanyl and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of dangerous weapons.
According to a police report, on May 23, 2024, at 12:07 p.m., Huntsville OPP arrested a male following reports of a person with a weapon near a public school and males fighting on Susan Street in the Town of Huntsville.
Court heard that police at first believed the suspect, Ryan, was in possession of a gun. However, it was ultimately determined he had a glass bong in one hand and a collapsible police baton in the other.
Police noted Ryan “was not entirely there,” and the court heard that a knife was found on him after his arrest.
Court heard Ryan was leaving a “well-known flop house.” A search of Ryan turned up 6g of cocaine, Sildenafil pills and an estimated $13,500 worth of fentanyl.
While Justice Cecile Applegate found Ryan guilty on the drug and weapons charges. She found him not guilty of possession of the proceeds of crime for the $300 found in his possession.
“While I am suspicious…I do have reasonable doubt as to whether the seized cash was the proceeds of crime,” she said.
Ryan was remanded in custody pending sentencing.
